The trees, which have been drastically reduced over the years, are a crucial resource for climate, biodiversity and soil<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">By Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>Singapore is ready to plant <strong>one million trees<\/strong> by 2030 in order to restore the habitat lost as a consequence of urban sprawl, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2022\/07\/singapore-will-plant-one-million-trees-by-2030-170d5bb611\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">says<\/a> the World Economic Forum (WEF). The operation is focused on mangroves, which are a typical as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/climate-biodiversity-mangroves\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">valuable<\/a> species because of their contribution to soil stability, biodiversity and climate mitigation.<\/p>\n<p>During the 20th century, the WEF recalls, Singapore <strong>lost 90 percent of the natural areas<\/strong> suitable for these plants. The decline, estimated at <strong>2,590 hectares<\/strong>, also includes 37 hectares of primary forest, which has declined by 4.3 percent.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Restoration efforts now aim to protect not only the quantity but also the variety of mangroves. According to <strong>Dan Friess<\/strong>, a geographer at National University of Singapore, there are as many as 35 different varieties in the city-state. Between 1980 and 2000, the U.S. think tank One Earth <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oneearth.org\/new-study-finds-catastrophic-loss-of-mangroves\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">says<\/a>, the world <strong>lost about 35 percent of its mangroves<\/strong>. During the 21st century, the situation has improved but the problem has not been solved. According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mangrovealliance.org\/mangrove-forests\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">latest report<\/a> by the NGO Global Mangrove Alliance, between 1996 and 2016 the total number of mangroves declined by another 4.3 percent.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"lMojhvvnnx\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/eu-rule-deforestation-lobbying\/\">Europe takes one more step back on anti-deforestation rules<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Europe takes one more step back on anti-deforestation rules&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/eu-rule-deforestation-lobbying\/embed\/#?secret=4obOseKIlu#?secret=lMojhvvnnx\" data-secret=\"lMojhvvnnx\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Plants are a resource for climate, soil and biodiversity<\/h5>\n<p>The numbers appear worrisome given the importance of these plants in protecting biodiversity. According to the same NGO, mangrove forests &#8220;are home to a rich fauna, <strong>including 341 internationally threatened species<\/strong>.&#8221; Moreover, mangorves&#8217; role in countering soil disturbance is equally important.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>These plants, in fact, \u201cact as permeable dams, dampening storm surges and reducing damage.\u201d According to estimates, says Global Alliance, these trees are thus able to avoid over <strong>$65 billion<\/strong> damage per year by reducing flooding risk for about 15 million people.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Finally, is their high carbon sequestration capacity is also crucial.
