Supporting farmers by rewarding soil- and climate-friendly practices is crucial<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">By Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Soil degradation, a problem that affects <strong>40 percent of the global land<\/strong>, poses a threat to climate and food security, the <strong>World Economic Forum<\/strong> (WEF) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2022\/06\/soil-land-degraded-food-crisis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>. The statement assumes particular relevance as developing countries are dealing with a worrisome food crisis fueled by rising commodity prices and <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/ukraine-russia-black-soil\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the fallout from the Ukraine war<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Today, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unccd.int\/resources\/global-land-outlook\/glo2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">says<\/a> <strong>The United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification<\/strong> (UNCCD), deteriorating land conditions impact 50% of human population. That is why, UNCCD Executive Secretary Ibrahim Thiaw reminds, &#8220;We need to urgently rethink our global food systems, which are responsible for<strong> 80% of deforestation<\/strong>, 70% of freshwater use, and the single greatest cause of terrestrial <strong>biodiversity<\/strong> loss.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"Q66oz82thr\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/drought-carbon-invertebrates-soil\/\">Drought, invertebrates, and carbon: the vicious cycle affecting soil and climate<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Drought, invertebrates, and carbon: the vicious cycle affecting soil and climate&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/drought-carbon-invertebrates-soil\/embed\/#?secret=JfYzapzlkV#?secret=Q66oz82thr\" data-secret=\"Q66oz82thr\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>That link between healthy soil and climate mitigation<\/h5>\n<p>The Forum, in particular, highlights the link between healthy land and <strong>climate change mitigation<\/strong>. The connection lies in soil&#8217;s ability to capture carbon and prevent it from leaking into the atmosphere. In this scenario, farmers can play a crucial role by implementing best practices in land management. These include plant diversification &#8211; as opposed to intensive monoculture, and the use of nature-based additives such as biochar.<\/p>\n<p>Created as a result of biomass pyrolysis, <strong>biochar<\/strong> is a plant-derived organic product capable of retaining moisture. The substace can also distribute nutrients more slowly and create suitable conditions for the development of <strong>soil microorganisms<\/strong>. Although it cannot be considered as a cure-all for soil problems, biochar application has proven useful in increasing organic carbon content and soil fertility. As such, it deserves to be studied extensively to identify its full potential.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"TGKOFav4FB\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/navajo-traditional-agriculture-soil-health\/\">Traditional agriculture is good for soil and human health. A recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/reports\/transforming-food-systems-with-farmers-a-pathway-for-the-eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WEF survey<\/a> of European farmers found that they typically complain of economic and management difficulties, while highlighting uneven adoption of technologies and suffering the effects of <strong>policy fragmentation<\/strong> at the national level.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The result is an inability to seize a <strong>hugely valuable opportunity<\/strong>, as certified by the organization&#8217;s estimates.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>According to WEF, in fact, &#8220;If farmers are supported to take climate-smart actions the EU could <strong>reduce its agricultural greenhouse gas emissions by an estimated 6%<\/strong>, restore soil health of <strong>over 14% of its total agricultural land<\/strong>, and add between \u20ac1.9bn and <strong>\u20ac9.3 billion<\/strong> annually to farmers\u2019 incomes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"Na4M72uH0E\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/commission-eu-agriculture-climate\/\">EU Commission wants to reward farmers for their climate-friendly practices<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;EU Commission wants to reward farmers for their climate-friendly practices&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/commission-eu-agriculture-climate\/embed\/#?secret=JmrA68W5dh#?secret=Na4M72uH0E\" data-secret=\"Na4M72uH0E\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Healthy soil must be rewarded<\/h5>\n<p>Finally, the WEF stressed the importance of remuneration for climate-friendly farming practices.\u00a0Starting in 2024 farmers in the <strong>United Kingdom<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/researchbriefings.files.parliament.uk\/documents\/POST-PN-0662\/POST-PN-0662.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">will be rewarded<\/a> if the quality of their soil reaches higher standards.<\/p>\n<p>European Commission is also studying new standards and pay schemes for farmers. In a <a href=\"https:\/\/op.europa.eu\/en\/publication-detail\/-\/publication\/b7b20495-a73e-11eb-9585-01aa75ed71a1\/language-en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> published in 2021, EU officials recalled that agriculture is responsible for about 10 percent of the EU&#8217;s total greenhouse gas emissions and recognized the importance of <strong>carbon farming<\/strong>. Agricultural practices that contribute to increased carbon sequestration, EU Commission says, <strong>should be rewarded according to schemes <\/strong>based on achieved results . In April this year, the Council of the European Union <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/eu-council-carbon-farming\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">endorsed<\/a> the conclusions expressed by the Commission, specifying that a legislative proposal is excpected by the end of 2022.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>World Economic Forum shows the link between soil health and climate mitigation.
