Study &#8220;contradicts official claims that toxic pesticides use is declining and that food residue levels are under control&#8221;<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">By Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Europeans&#8217; exposure to the most toxic <strong>pesticides<\/strong>, whose residues are increasingly found on fruits and vegetables routinely consumed on the Continent, is growing, says a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pan-europe.info\/sites\/pan-europe.info\/files\/public\/resources\/reports\/ForbiddenFruit_01.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> by <strong>Pesticide Action Network (PAN)<\/strong>, a federation that brings together hundreds of NGOs in 60 different countries. The analysis carried out on nearly 100 thousand samples of edible vegetables <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2022\/may\/24\/european-fruit-with-traces-of-most-toxic-pesticides-up-53-in-nine-years?CMP=share_btn_tw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">showed<\/a> a <strong>53 percent<\/strong> increase in cases of contamination between 2011 and 2019.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;This report and its primary conclusion <strong>contradict official claims<\/strong> that toxic pesticides use is declining and that food residue levels are under control,&#8221; a statement <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pan-europe.info\/resources\/reports\/2022\/05\/forbidden-fruit-dramatic-rise-dangerous-pesticides-found-fruits-and?dm_i=6LRU,IP3X,3VC4HX,2EF8K,1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">says<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The study also &#8220;exposes a complete failure by Member States and the European Commission to implement EU Regulation and protect consumers.&#8221; The pesticides being observed, the researchers note, are <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/us-meat-pesticides\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">harmful to the environment and human health<\/a>, as they are linked to a number of serious diseases such as cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Since 2011, the EU aimed at gradually substituting toxic <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/pesticides?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#pesticides<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EU_Commission?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@EU_Commission<\/a> declared a 12% use \u2b07\ufe0f of the more hazardous pesticides in 2019. Our report shows a 53% \u2b06\ufe0f in the most hazardous pesticide residues found on European grown \ud83c\udf4e\ud83c\udf50\ud83c\udf52\ud83e\udd5d <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/KIkkpqAtgN\">pic.twitter.com\/KIkkpqAtgN<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; PAN Europe (@EuropePAN) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EuropePAN\/status\/1529024202912718848?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 24, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h5>Pesticide contamination is on the rise<\/h5>\n<p>Focusing on the most harmful substances, identified as such by the European Commission in its <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/news\/farm-to-fork-raccomandazioni-parlamento-europeo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Farm to Fork Strategy<\/a>, the plan developed <strong>to make the food production system sustainable<\/strong>, the survey traces an historical time series of the contamination.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>These data &#8220;srevealed <strong>a dramatic upward trend<\/strong> of fruits contaminated with the most hazardous category of pesticides between 2011 and 2019, the latest year for which their data was available for this paper.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A few examples speak clearly. In 2011, the study recalls, only 4 percent of kiwifruit sold in Europe had traces of pesticides. By 2019, the share of contaminated samples <strong>had risen to 32 percent<\/strong>. During the same period, the incidence on <strong>cherries<\/strong> more than doubled from 22 percent to 50 percent. These <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/food\/plant\/pesticides\/eu-pesticides-database\/active-substances\/index.cfm?event=search.as&amp;t=3&amp;s=3&amp;s=1&amp;a_from=&amp;a_to=&amp;e_from=&amp;e_to=&amp;additionalfilter__class_p1=&amp;additionalfilter__class_p2=&amp;string_tox_1=&amp;string_tox_1=&amp;string_tox_2=&amp;string_tox_2=&amp;string_tox_3=&amp;string_tox_3=&amp;string_tox_4=&amp;string_tox_4=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">54 incriminated substances<\/a>\u00a0are classified as &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/food\/plants\/pesticides\/approval-active-substances_en#candidates-for-substitution\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">candidates for substitution<\/a>&#8221; because of their <strong>potential impact<\/strong> on health, soil and the environment. Under the current <a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/it\/TXT\/?uri=celex%3A32009R1107\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Regulation<\/a>, member states are required to replace these compounds with safer alternatives.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Based on sales, the European Commission already claims a 12% reduction in 2019 compared to 2015- 2017\u201d, researchers say. \u201cHowever, this report, which provides evidence of the quantity of pesticides that actually end up in food daily eaten by a large majority of European consumers, is a strong rebuttal to that claim: in 2019, the proportion of fruit and vegetables contaminated with the most hazardous pesticides <strong>increased by 8.8%<\/strong> compared to 2015-2017.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"t5eHzhjGp3\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/agricolture-usa-pesticides\/\">Pesticides rule in U.S. farmland as 146,000 MT of banned chemicals are in place<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Pesticides rule in U.S. farmland as 146,000 MT of banned chemicals are in place&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/agricolture-usa-pesticides\/embed\/#?secret=KT7FviwA9w#?secret=t5eHzhjGp3\" data-secret=\"t5eHzhjGp3\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>A vicious cycle exists between plants and pesticides<\/h5>\n<p>Prolonged use of pesticides, the researchers conclude, also promotes the outbreak of a real <strong>vicious cycle<\/strong> in crop management. Over time, in fact, plants and insects develop <strong>resistance to the substances<\/strong> thus leading to their greater usage. Without alternatives, in other words, the presence of chemical compounds in agriculture is likely to increase.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, the authors call for strong political action to reform the EU&#8217;s food production system in a sustainable way. By 2030, the NGOs insist, Europe should <strong>replace all hazardous pesticides<\/strong>.
