While in soil, absorbed carbon exceeds the amount emitted<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In three decades, Europe has experienced a significant decline in C02 <strong>emissions<\/strong>, which have shrunk by about a third under the impulse of various factors. <strong>Agriculture<\/strong> <strong>and soil<\/strong> both contributed to this contraction, thanks in part to a decrease in the use of fertilizers and the expansion of forests, the <strong>European Environment Agency<\/strong> (EEA) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eea.europa.eu\/highlights\/continued-drop-in-eus-greenhouse?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=Continued%20drop%20in%20EUs%20greenhouse%20gas%20emissions%20confirms%20achievement%20of%202020%20target&amp;utm_content=Continued%20drop%20in%20EUs%20greenhouse%20gas%20emissions%20confirms%20achievement%20of%202020%20target+CID_627b896fee9b0a63f3e6e651cfe0cc41&amp;utm_source=EEA%20Newsletter&amp;utm_term=Find%20out%20more\">said<\/a> in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eea.europa.eu\/publications\/annual-european-union-greenhouse-gas-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> that explores trends between 1990 and 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Over the period, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eea.europa.eu\/publications\/annual-european-union-greenhouse-gas-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">official figures<\/a> indicate, annual emissions <strong>fell by nearly 2 billion tons<\/strong> of CO2 equivalent, from 5.65 billion to 3.7 billion. The <strong>United Kingdom<\/strong> and <strong>Germany<\/strong>, in particular, have played a primary role having contributed <strong>47 percent of the net reduction<\/strong> over the past 30 years alone. Environmental and agricultural policies, as well as energy choices, the EEA argues, have been crucial drivers.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Key drivers that led to emission reductions over the past three decades include the <strong>growing use of renewables<\/strong>, the use of less carbon intensive fossil fuels and improvements in energy efficiency, structural changes in the economy, lower demand for heating due to warmer winters in Europe,&#8221; the report says.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>However, there are exceptions. &#8220;All sectors reduced emissions <strong>except for transport and refrigeration and air conditioning<\/strong>, although the latter have been decreasing in the last few years&#8221;, accordint to the study. In addition, &#8220;Reductions were largest for manufacturing industries and construction, electricity and heat production, iron and steel production (including energy-related emissions) and residential combustion.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"ZoioLfGOKX\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/sustainable-agriculture-minus-7-percent-emissions\/\">Changing agriculture would result in a 7% reduction in emissions<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Changing agriculture would result in a 7% reduction in emissions&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/sustainable-agriculture-minus-7-percent-emissions\/embed\/#?secret=LjTEYOmbih#?secret=ZoioLfGOKX\" data-secret=\"ZoioLfGOKX\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Annual agricultural emissions fell by 108 million tons since 1990<\/h5>\n<p>Agriculture, meanwhile, has played an important role. Total emissions from the sector <strong>dropped by 20.7 percent<\/strong> from 532 million tons in 1990 to 424 million tons in 2020. Decreases in the total livestock population (-28.6 percent during the period under investigation) and a <strong>decrease in the use of fertilizers<\/strong> (-12.4 percent for those of organic origin, -25.2 percent for synthetics) were among the determining factors.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The numbers, in short, are definitely encouraging. But we should also note that the trend <strong>has been worsening in the 21st century<\/strong>. In December 2021, in fact, the Environment Agency <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eea.europa.eu\/ims\/greenhouse-gas-emissions-from-agriculture\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> little improvement between 2005 and 2019.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Moreover, 14 of the 27 member states-including Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Luxembourg, and Hungary-had even recorded an increase in emissions from the agricultural sector in the same period.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"mPqecbE8ws\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/sustainable-soil-carbon-offesetting\/\">Well managed soil can offset as much as 34% of agricultural emissions<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Well managed soil can offset as much as 34% of agricultural emissions&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/sustainable-soil-carbon-offesetting\/embed\/#?secret=9uXq0vfe6q#?secret=mPqecbE8ws\" data-secret=\"mPqecbE8ws\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>Soil keeps doing its job<\/h5>\n<p>Finally, the contribution of <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/environment\/carbon-sequestration-climate-storage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">carbon storage<\/a> is significant. &#8220;Within the EU GHG inventory, the LULUCF sector shows higher removals by sinks than emissions by sources&#8221;, the authors say, &#8220;a result the sector represents a net carbon sink.&#8221; In 2020, European soil (including EU-27, United Kingdom and Iceland) was confirmed as a &#8220;net sink.&#8221; Absorbing <strong>more than 246,000 more tons of carbon<\/strong> than it emitted. A figure that marks an 11 percent growth from the 223 thousand recorded 30 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>The expansion of forested areas has been crucial: &#8220;Within the EU GHG inventory, the LULUCF sector shows higher removals by sinks than emissions by sources,&#8221; researchers say. Anyway, net carbon uptake &#8220;is experiencing <strong>a decline<\/strong> since late 2000s.&#8221; A consequence of aging forests and growth in wood harvesting.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Between 1990 and 2020, annual CO2 equivalent emissions fell from 5.65 billion tons to 3.7 billion tons.
