Concerns over heavy metal contamination<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>India<\/strong>&#8216;s agricultural fields are facing a significant problem of <strong>microplastics<\/strong> contamination. An effect of the widespread use of mulch films used for crop protection, but not without side effects. That&#8217;s the alarm raised by a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/360773890_Plastic_Mulching_Microplastics_in_Agricultural_Soil\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recent research<\/a> released by local NGO <strong>Toxic Links<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The films, which are rolled out in the field or used as cover for greenhouses, tend to degrade by releasing extremely small plastic particles measuring less than 5 millimeters in diameter, the researchers explain. This particles <strong>can infiltrate deep into the soil<\/strong>, moving directly to the crops and, through them, to the human body itself.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Microplastics?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Microplastics<\/a> are not just polluting our oceans but also contaminating our <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/soil?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#soil<\/a>? <\/p>\n<p>A first-of-its-kind study titled \u201cPlastic Mulching: Microplastics in Agricultural Soils,\u201d launched by Toxics Link reveals a high abundance of microplastics in the soil using <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/plasticmulch?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#plasticmulch<\/a> sheets. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/vBEMXTyZ1w\">pic.twitter.com\/vBEMXTyZ1w<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Toxics Link (@toxicslink) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/toxicslink\/status\/1522185514778230784?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 5, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h5>Disposal remains the main challenge<\/h5>\n<p>The survey focused on the states of <strong>Maharashtra<\/strong> and <strong>Karnataka<\/strong> where the use of mulch films has been widespread for a past few years. Researchers collected <strong>30 different soil samples<\/strong> in two different districts at various depths. Contamination was found everywhere thus highlighting the ability of the material to infiltrate the soil although the levels measured were variable.<\/p>\n<p>A landfill in Maharashtra, where farmers had disposed of used films, recorded the highest degree of contamination with as much as <strong>87.57 units of microplastics per kilogram of soil<\/strong>. This is twice the concentration found in the field where the same tarps had been used. The discrepancy detected thus highlights the problem of material disposal, which continues to be a particularly significant obstacle.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"0GHanf2VSu\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/plastic-europe-waste-problem\/\">Plastic packaging: Europe faces a waste problem<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Plastic packaging: Europe faces a waste problem&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/plastic-europe-waste-problem\/embed\/#?secret=tLH0T8FPTf#?secret=0GHanf2VSu\" data-secret=\"0GHanf2VSu\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Agricultural supply chains use 12.5 million tons of plastic annually<\/h5>\n<p>Last year, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fao.org\/publications\/card\/en\/c\/CB7856EN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) showed that <strong>agricultural supply chains<\/strong> use <strong>12.5 million tons<\/strong> of plastic products each year. Another <strong>37.3 million tons<\/strong> are used in <strong>food packaging<\/strong>. The largest users are the various segments of agricultural production and livestock farming, with 10.2 million tons per year combined. This is followed by fisheries and aquaculture with 2.1 million tons and forestry with 200 thousand tons.<\/p>\n<p>The U.N. agency&#8217;s study, of course, <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/plastic-contamination-in-agricultural-land\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">also pointed<\/a> to the problem of <strong>managing used-up films<\/strong>. The volume of which, in Europe alone, amounts to 15 thousand tons annually. This is also why the <strong>FAO<\/strong> has officially recommended the replacement of synthetic mulching films with <strong>biodegradable and compostable films<\/strong>. FAO, 2021<\/p><\/div>\n<h5>Microplastics alter soil characteristics<\/h5>\n<p>&#8220;The excessive use of plastic across multiple sectors is emerging as a major cause of environmental concern due to its <strong>non-degradable<\/strong> property and remains being found in various ecosystemsm\u201d researchers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/profile\/Amit-Chauhan-7\/publication\/360773890_Plastic_Mulching_Microplastics_in_Agricultural_Soil\/links\/6289fd2c6e41e5002d3a6f05\/Plastic-Mulching-Microplastics-in-Agricultural-Soil.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">say<\/a>. \u201cPlastic has been increasingly used in agriculture to improve crop productivity and reduce water consumption in agriculture. In India, too, there has been an increasing trend on use of plastic in agriculture though this is a relatively recent phenomenon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The findings \u201cdo provide evidence of its residue being abundantly present in soil with varying concentration and at various depths. Scientists suggested that this phenomenon is the result of the dispersion of such elements following the degradation of the films.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPossible sources of these heavy metals also point towards its <strong>leaching<\/strong> from the mulch,\u201d researchers write. \u201cThis would require further investigation of its uptake into crops and its larger impact of human health.\u201d Moreover, \u201cBased on these results, it is likely that microplastics in the soil environment can be vectors for transferring heavy metals or other toxics pollutants.
