Socioeconomic and demographic factors are driving the trend<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The future of the <strong>Akure-Ofosu<\/strong> Forest, one of <strong>Nigeria<\/strong>&#8216;s major nature reserves, is at great risk, latest data quoted by the U.S.-based NGO Mongabay have suggested. Determinant is the burden of arson, &#8220;often used to clear land for agriculture in Nigeria and elsewhere in the tropics.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>According to <strong>Orji Sunday<\/strong>, a Mongabay contributor, other socioeconomic factors including unemployment are also driving the trend.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;The cocoa farms in the reserves are growing,\u201d a local farmer told the U.S. NGO. \u201cThere are no jobs in the cities. Deforestation, in fact, <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/nigeria-deforestation-meat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has been growing<\/a> in Nigeria for at least two decades. The count includes 141 thousand hectares of primary forests and results in additional <strong>527 million tons of CO2 emissions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.globalforestwatch.org\/embed\/widget\/treeLoss\/country\/NGA\" width=\"630\" height=\"460\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h5>Poverty is the crucial factor<\/h5>\n<p>The demand for natural resource exploitation, Mongabay notes, is also fueled by the country&#8217;s persistent poverty. According to World Bank <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldbank.org\/en\/news\/infographic\/2022\/03\/21\/afw-nigeria-poverty-assessment-2022-a-better-future-for-all-nigerians\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">estimates<\/a>, <strong>80 million<\/strong> Nigerians, or about <strong>40 percent of the population<\/strong>, live below poverty line. Covid&#8217;s impact, moreover, have increased that figure by 5 million people. With clear collateral consequences for the environment.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Forest conservation can never flourish in poverty,\u201d <strong>Babafemi Ogunjemite<\/strong>, a primatologist and professor at the Federal University of Technology in Akure, explained to Mongabay. \u201cThe margin of the poverty level is so high that anyone can sacrifice anything for food \u2014 including the forest.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Over the years the government has chosen <strong>to loosen its grip on forest protection<\/strong> by allowing farmers to claim part of the reserve lands. Sources familiar with the matter told the NGO that farmers can settle in the protected territories by paying an annual fee of 10 thousand naira, about $24 at today&#8217;s exchange rate. The authorities classify these operators as &#8220;temporary occupants&#8221; even though their presence is permanent.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"6Z3p9UTWMD\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/soil-war-nigeria\/\">From climate change to demography. Since 1950, Nigeria&#8217;s population has grown from less than 37 million to <strong>216 million<\/strong>, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unfpa.org\/data\/world-population\/NG\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UN figures<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;But sources said job creation has not kept pace, forcing people to choose between forests and their families,&#8221; Mongabay notes. This expansion has produced strong <strong>growth in livestock and agriculture<\/strong> with an obvious impact on resource exploitation.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The search for living space <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/soil-war-nigeria\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has also fueled a bloody conflict<\/a> between herders and farmers over the years. According to Amnesty International <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-nigeria-security-farmer-herder-idUSKBN1OG00I\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">estimates<\/a>, this has led to <strong>more than 3,600 deaths<\/strong> between January 2016 and October 2018, when the surveys stopped. The federal government has tried to resolve the issue by proposing the establishment of special colonies for grazing.
