After mangroves, alarm now extends to inland forests<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">By Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Consumption of smoked fish is reportedly fueling deforestation in <strong>Congo-Brazzaville<\/strong> according to Africa News, a TV channel controlled by Euronews SA. The popularity of Makwala, as this specialty is called, in fact, is boosting large demand for firewood from producers, the TV claims. This trend has already resulted in a widespread destruction of <strong>mangroves<\/strong>, which is a notoriously <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/climate-biodiversity-mangroves\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">valuable<\/a> resource.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"LnJ5r3nCZA\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/africa-recycle-coconut-deforestation\/\">The story of Alhaji, the startupper who is curbing deforestation with coconut waste<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;The story of Alhaji, the startupper who is curbing deforestation with coconut waste&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/africa-recycle-coconut-deforestation\/embed\/#?secret=3QM4MVMY2A#?secret=LnJ5r3nCZA\" data-secret=\"LnJ5r3nCZA\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Mangrove emergency<\/h5>\n<p>&#8220;On one hectare, I can have about 700 trees, 1000, or 250, or 500 it depends,&#8221; a local logger <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africanews.com\/2022\/03\/19\/congo-fish-smoking-driving-deforestation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> Africa News. &#8220;One thing is sure. In one month, I can cut down trees over 3000 meters by 100 meters,&#8221; he adds. His worda are a cause for concern. In addition to being home to <strong>a wide variety of animal species<\/strong>, mangrove forests act as permeable dams by dampening storm surges and limiting their impact. Moreover, tmangroves have a high carbon sequestration capacity with obvious positive impact on climate mitigation.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Between 1980 and 2000, the US think tank One Earth <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oneearth.org\/new-study-finds-catastrophic-loss-of-mangroves\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>, the world <strong>lost about 35 percent<\/strong> of its mangroves.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Although the situation has improved during the 21st century, however, between 1996 and 2016, the latest report by the NGO Global Mangrove Alliance <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mangrovealliance.org\/mangrove-forests\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">says<\/a>, the Planet experienced <strong>a net loss of 4.3 percent<\/strong> of these trees. The rate of regrowth, in other words, has not been high enough to offset the losses.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.globalforestwatch.org\/embed\/widget\/treeLoss\/country\/COG\" width=\"630\" height=\"460\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h5>Large-scale deforestation<\/h5>\n<p>Mangroves, however, represent only a portion of the story. The growth of illegal logging and the gradual depletion of plants in coastal locations is allegedly fueling increased deforestation in <strong>inland areas<\/strong>. The arrangement involves a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldbank.org\/en\/news\/press-release\/2021\/05\/03\/world-bank-and-republic-of-congo-sign-agreement-to-reduce-carbon-emissions-and-preserve-forests\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">total funding<\/a> of <strong>$41.8 million<\/strong> to support efforts to tackle <strong>deforestation<\/strong> and climate change. World Bank, in particular, &#8220;will reward efforts to reduce 8.4 million tons of carbon emissions through 2025 under the Republic of Congo\u2019s ambitious emission reductions program.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The country&#8217;s <strong>social and economic conditions<\/strong>, however, are still an obstacle. &#8220;Smoking fish is a difficult job. It depends on the quantity and size of the fish,&#8221; one worker tells Africa News. &#8220;When it comes to big fish, it consumes quite a bit of wood unlike frying.&#8221; Some charities are trying to convince operators to adopt more efficient ovens. But without success. &#8220;She smokers find the ovens expensive\u201d, the broadcaster says. \u201cElectricity is unreliable and many people cannot afford gas.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the Republic of Congo, growing demand for firewood is fueling deforestation.
