That is the goal of the <strong>#Soils4Nutrition<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fao.org\/global-soil-partnership\/areas-of-work\/soil-fertility\/photocontest-on-soils4nutrition-guidelines\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">photo contest<\/a>, launched by the <strong>FAO<\/strong> in the framework of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fao.org\/events\/detail\/symposium-soils-for-nutrition\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Global Symposium on Soils for Nutrition<\/a>\u00a0scheduled for <strong>July 26-29<\/strong>. Indeed, among the <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/ukraine-russia-black-soil\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">direct consequences<\/a> of the Russian invasion, the shrinking agricultural production and <strong>disruptions on the supply chain<\/strong> stand out, analysts say. Both issues deeply impact the balance of the global food system.<\/p>\n<p>However, the conflict between Moscow and Kiev isn&#8217;t the only problem. In fact, what is also threatening food security in developing countries is the persistence of a chronic and widespread issue on a large scale: <strong>micronutrient deficiency<\/strong>. To date, <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/news\/suolo-fame-micronutrienti\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">says<\/a> FAO,<strong> 30 percent of the world&#8217;s population<\/strong> does not take in sufficient amounts of essential elements and substances such as iron, zinc, folate, vitamins and more. This is a consequence of under varied diets but also of the effects of soil degradation.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"1u3CiUafZG\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/fao-biodiversity-for-kids\/\">FAO launches soil biodiversity for kids<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;FAO launches soil biodiversity for kids&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/fao-biodiversity-for-kids\/embed\/#?secret=kL0lmuesYa#?secret=1u3CiUafZG\" data-secret=\"1u3CiUafZG\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Soil protection is crucial<\/h5>\n<p>When soil health declines, in fact, nutrient depletion is inevitable. Crops lose essential elements, limiting the physical and mental potential of younger individuals. &#8220;In the poorest parts of India and China,&#8221; the British broadcaster BBC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/future\/bespoke\/follow-the-food\/the-hidden-hunger-affecting-billions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reminds<\/a>, &#8220;millions of children have their lives stunted through lack of iron. In South Asia, an estimated <strong>50% of pregnant women<\/strong> have iron deficiency, and it is also prevalent in South America and sub-Saharan Africa.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>To tackle nutrient hunger, the FAO <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fao.org\/3\/BC275e\/bc275e.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">says<\/a>, we need to move toward sustainable agricultural models thus ensuring food production as well as &#8220;protecting environmental resources, including soil, and provide economic profitability while maintaining social equity,&#8221; according to a common <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/scitable\/knowledge\/library\/soil-the-foundation-of-agriculture-84224268\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">definition<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That means implementing practices such as crop rotation, <strong>reducing erosion<\/strong> and enriching the presence of organic matter. A jury composed of an independent panel of people with different areas of expertise in photography will select the <strong>10 best works<\/strong> that will be displayed on the websites and social channels of the United Nations and FAO. The authors will receive an award, gadgets and FAO publications and will will have their entries exposed on the websites and social media channels of the United Nations and FAO. Finally, public voting will choose the best photo from the 10 shortlisted entries.
