This represents <strong>31% of the investments<\/strong>. The remaining part would then finance activities unrelated to the issue or could be available as liquidity for other operations, such as the provision of social security services.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;There\u2019s <strong>\u00a32.7 trillion<\/strong> in UK pension funds\u201d, researchers explain.\u201cOur report shows that pension funds and their asset managers continue to invest in industries and companies which go against our values, damage the environment, and jeopardise the very futures we\u2019re saving for<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>These investments also &#8220;cause significant social, economic and environmental damage, destroying nature and putting lives and livelihoods around the world at risk. In 2021, a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.milieudefensie.nl\/news\/dutch-financial-sector-european-frontrunner-in-financing-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">survey<\/a> released by the NGO <strong>Friends of the Earth<\/strong> and the independent research firm <strong>Profund<\/strong> showed, for example, that between 2016 and 2020 the three major Dutch banks &#8211; <strong>ING, Rabobank and ABN AMRO<\/strong> &#8211; had financed with 3.1 billion euros (the <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/dutch-banks-deforestation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">highest figure<\/a> in Europe banking sector) commodities companies connected to deforestation and human rights violations.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The study conducted by Make My Money Matter study in co-operation with German company SYSTEMIQ and British NGO Global Canopy, also highlights the consequences for <strong>financial companies<\/strong> and even taxpayers.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;Such investments are not only bad for people and planet, they\u2019re bad for our money too\u201d, the study says. \u201cAs these industries are more exposed to climate risk and increasing regulation, our money could be put at risk as companies lose value and become uninvestable in the future if they do not change their practices.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"SzO1FthaNa\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/north-south-korea-deforestation\/\">Koreas can get closer by standing together against deforestation<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Koreas can get closer by standing together against deforestation&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/north-south-korea-deforestation\/embed\/#?secret=RwoxiCZ40R#?secret=SzO1FthaNa\" data-secret=\"SzO1FthaNa\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>The campaign&#8217;s proposals<\/h5>\n<p>And here&#8217;s what the campaigners are suggesting, as they ask future pensioners, funds and the government to act:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong>Individual pension holders<\/strong> (you) to call on your pension provider to commit to going deforestation free. <\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>For <strong>pension funds<\/strong> to commit to achieving deforestation-free portfolios, and to take immediate action to start eliminating deforestation by understanding their exposure, setting effective policies, monitoring and engaging investee companies and asset managers, and disclosing progress against goals.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>For <strong>government and regulators<\/strong> to take urgent steps to ensure that the UK is a global leader in achieving deforestation -free pension funds by setting out mandatory requirements for the finance sector on deforestation \u2013 including due diligence and disclosure.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8220;We\u2019re calling for people to sign our petition to cut deforestation from our pensions and make sure our money isn\u2019t unknowingly helping to destroy the planet,\u201d says <strong>Izzy Howden<\/strong>, activist and strategy consultant at Make My Money Matter, was quoted to say by Euronews. \u201cThe public has this huge weapon in their armoury when fighting for the planet,\u201d conclude Richard Curtis, \u201cthe trillions of pounds in their pensions.
