Food production at risk<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In the last 150 years, erosion has stolen <strong>57.6 billion tons<\/strong> of soil from the US Midwest as a result of unsustainable agricultural practices, according to a study of the <strong>University of Massachusetts Amherst<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencenews.org\/article\/soil-erosion-rate-us-midwest-unsustainable-usda\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">quoted<\/a> in the journal Science News. The figure shows a much higher level of degradation than previously estimated by the Department of Agriculture.<\/p>\n<p>At the heart of the investigation are the tillage practices used in the process of uncultivated land conversion into agricultural fields. According to the researchers, <strong>only 0.1% of America&#8217;s original grasslands<\/strong> still survive today. At the same time, the future productivity of the fields is put at risk by the process of soil erosion.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"vtSajJuf2f\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/compost-usa-2-bn\/\">US compost industry could get $2 bn brand new government funds<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;US compost industry could get $2 bn brand new government funds&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/compost-usa-2-bn\/embed\/#?secret=BErnhOPmlR#?secret=vtSajJuf2f\" data-secret=\"vtSajJuf2f\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Erosion amounts to 37 centimeters in 150 years<\/h5>\n<p>&#8220;<strong>Erosion<\/strong> degrades soils, reduces crop yields, and diminishes ecosystem services\u201d, <a href=\"https:\/\/agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1029\/2021EF002396\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the study<\/a> says. \u201cIn the Midwestern U.S., erosion has caused native prairie remnants to become perched above surrounding farmland, providing an opportunity to measure historical soil erosion rates.&#8221; Analyzing 20 sites across 9 different states, the researchers used a GPS Altitude System to assess the differences recorded between prairie and agricultural land.<\/p>\n<p>In doing so, it was possible to detect an <strong>average difference of 37 centimeters<\/strong>, which corresponds to an average erosion estimated at 1.9 millimeters per year since the introduction of traditional agriculture. By adopting a different method, in fact, government observers have recorded much lower numbers &#8211; from one third to one eighth of the figures obtained by the researchers of the University of Massachusetts.<\/p>\n<p>The problem, Science News says, is that the USDA estimates &#8220;do not include <strong>tillage<\/strong>, a conventional farming process in which machinery is used to turn the soil and prepare it for planting\u201d. This process, which alters the <strong>soil structure<\/strong> itself,\u201cincreases surface runoff and erosion due to soil moving downslope.&#8221; If tillage were taken into account, the scientists say, erosion estimates would be much more accurate.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"AOZZEOkvCh\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/soil-protection-nasa\/\">NASA takes care of soil protection for farmers&#8217; sake<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;NASA takes care of soil protection for farmers&#8217; sake&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/soil-protection-nasa\/embed\/#?secret=7zkmz5FZnA#?secret=AOZZEOkvCh\" data-secret=\"AOZZEOkvCh\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Damage to food production<\/h5>\n<p>Meanwhile, erosion also negatively impacts yields. Indeed, soil degradation, the researchers note, &#8220;<strong>diminishes soil fertility<\/strong> by removing <strong>organic matter<\/strong> and nutrients which, without countervailing practices such as fertilization and genetic crop enhancements, leads to reductions in crop yields.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Fertilizer<\/strong> use, however, &#8220;does not fully restore the productivity of eroded soils and because fossil fuels are required to generate the energy required for fertilizer production, the use of fertilizers to increase yields in degraded soils is not sustainable.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>To date, &#8220;soil loss is already causing <strong>food production<\/strong> to decline,&#8221; Isaac Larsen, a geologist at the University of Massachusetts, told Science News. And the data are there to prove it. &#8220;As soil thickness decreases\u201d, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/profile\/Mahdi-Al-Kaisi\/publication\/265410087_Soil_Erosion_Crop_Productivity_and_Cultural_Practices\/links\/549821df0cf2c5a7e3429cca\/Soil-Erosion-Crop-Productivity-and-Cultural-Practices.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">says<\/a> the magazine, \u201cthe amount of corn successfully grown in Iowa is reduced. Source: FAO, 2019.<\/p><\/div>\n<h5>Cover crops as a possible solution<\/h5>\n<p>Soil erosion is a<strong> worldwide phenomenon<\/strong>. Human activities some damaging practices such as intensive agriculture, deforestation, overgrazing and improper changes in land use in particular are the main causes, FAO <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/editoriali\/emergenza-erosione\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">says<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Among the proposed solutions, the introduction of <strong>cover crops<\/strong> and the use of no-till farming are particularly important. In the U.S., the magazine says, about half of all corn, soybean, cotton and wheat farmers have applied some kind of anti-erosion strategy at least once, according to the USDA. Cover crops, however, are used by <strong>just 5% of farmers<\/strong>.
