A report accuses the subsidiary of a Korean company (which denies any wrongdoing) and two local operators of the palm oil industry<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>By 2021, deforestation in <strong>Indonesia<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Papua<\/strong> province reached 5,810 hectares, about the size of Manhattan Island according to a report by local NGO <strong>Pusaka<\/strong>. The study, conducted using satellite imagery provided by the Planet Labs company and integrated with surveys on the ground, accuses some operators in the <strong>paper<\/strong> and <strong>palm oil<\/strong> sectors. PNMP, Pusaka claims, allegedly cleared <strong>1,789 hectares<\/strong> of lowland forest, swamp and peat forest. PNMP camp manager Cha Hyun Soo, dismissed the charges by denying the very presence of peat forest in the area subject to the concession. The manager also said the company is operating in accordance with its environmental impact assessment.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"gDgdCdRpYN\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/indonesia-deforestation-deaths\/\">Deforestation-related deaths are rising in Indonesia<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Deforestation-related deaths are rising in Indonesia&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/indonesia-deforestation-deaths\/embed\/#?secret=vfzscbQM15#?secret=gDgdCdRpYN\" data-secret=\"gDgdCdRpYN\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Two palm oil companies under accusation<\/h5>\n<p>The study, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2022\/03\/palm-oil-and-pulpwood-the-usual-suspects-as-papua-deforestation-persists\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">says<\/a> the American environmental NGO Mongabay, also highlights the responsibilities of two local companies in the <strong>palm oil<\/strong> sector. The first, <strong>PT Medco Papua Hijau Selaras<\/strong>, would be responsible for the deforestation of 1,038 hectares in its concession area in Manokwari district.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Pusaka said Indigenous inhabitants and company workers often complained about the company\u2019s activities, which they deemed to be damaging the forests, polluting the water and air, and <strong>exacerbating the<\/strong> <strong>impact of floods<\/strong>,&#8221; Mongabay writes.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>PT Perkebunan Boven Digoel Sejahtera<\/strong>, another palm oil company allegedly contributed to deforestation in the Boven Digoel district, according to the environmentalists. Its logging operations are said to have affected a 434 ha area.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"70ZwAm071R\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/uk-banks-deforestation\/\">UK banks criticized for their support to deforestation<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;UK banks criticized for their support to deforestation&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/uk-banks-deforestation\/embed\/#?secret=FPpeZrQQBA#?secret=70ZwAm071R\" data-secret=\"70ZwAm071R\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Concerns about the Tanah Merah project<\/h5>\n<p>The areas under concession, writes Mongabay, are part of the <strong>Tanah Merah<\/strong> project, a development plan designed to create the world&#8217;s largest palm oil plantation. Total area includes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earthsight.org.uk\/news\/idm\/fake-permits-underpin-tanah-merah-palm-oil-project-indonesia-papua\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">seven cultivation zones<\/a>, covering <strong>2,800sq km<\/strong> of largely primary forest, subject to permits issued by the government of Jakarta. The operations, which reportedly involve several shell companies, have been the subject of controversy after an investigation <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2018\/11\/the-secret-deal-to-destroy-paradise\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">conducted by Mongabay<\/a> exposed their lack of transparency and alleged irregularities.<\/p>\n<p>According to estimates published by the US-based non-governmental organization, deforestation associated with the full development of the project could generate a total of <strong>102 million tons CO2 emissions<\/strong>. The resulting costs have been enormous. The agreement, reached under the UN&#8217;s REDD+ mechanism, committed Oslo to funding the Asian nation&#8217;s climate mitigation efforts with $1 billion. Last year, the contract was scrapped. Indonesian authorities <a href=\"https:\/\/kemlu.go.id\/portal\/en\/read\/2912\/berita\/indonesia-terminates-the-loi-on-redd-with-norway\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">made it clear<\/a> that the end of the deal would in no way affect the government&#8217;s commitment to cutting emissions. The promise failed to convince the director of <strong>Greenpeace&#8217;s<\/strong> forest conservation campaign in Indonesia, <strong>Kiki Taufik<\/strong>.
