But the biggest surge comes from consumers: in the midst of the pandemic, sales mark the highest growth of the decade<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Land area devoted to<strong> organic farming<\/strong> is growing in Europe, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fibl.org\/en\/info-centre\/news\/exceptional-growth-of-the-european-organic-market-2020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">latest data<\/a> released by the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (<strong>FiBL<\/strong>) has shown. In 2020, the last year for which complete data are available, organic farming in the European continent involved <strong>17.1 million hectares<\/strong>, 14.9 of which within the EU. This last figure marks an increase of 700 thousand hectares, equal to <strong>5.3%<\/strong> more than the previous survey.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, the numbers recorded by researchers show a slowdown in overall growth. Confirming <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/filiera-agricola\/biologico-italia-ue-2020\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a trend<\/a> that has been underway for quite some time.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The European organic market reached a record high in 2020. The latest data are shown in the statistical yearbook &quot;The World of Organic Agriculture 2022&quot;, which will be launched on Tuesday, 15 February 2022, from 12 to 1 pm (CET).<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ZPFRLpXlEk\">https:\/\/t.co\/ZPFRLpXlEk<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FiBLStatistics?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@FiBLStatistics<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Vxzm4EaTd8\">pic.twitter.com\/Vxzm4EaTd8<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; FiBL (@fiblorg) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/fiblorg\/status\/1493526473898172417?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 15, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h5>France, Spain and Italy are on top of the list<\/h5>\n<p>In the country ranking, <strong>France<\/strong> takes the first place with almost 2.5 million hectares of organic crops, followed by Spain (2.4 million), <strong>Italy<\/strong> (2.1) and <strong>Germany<\/strong> (1.7). Also certifying French supremacy is the data on annual growth with 307 thousand hectares higher than in 2019. The increase is smaller in Italy (102 thousand hectares) and Germany (88 thousand).<\/p>\n<p>On balance, the percentage of organic crops on the total agricultural land reaches 3.4% in Europe and 9.2% in the EU. Among the 27 EU countries, <strong>Austria<\/strong> has the highest figure with <strong>26.5% of land dedicated to organic farming<\/strong>. <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/databrowser\/view\/ORG_CROPAR__custom_2190595\/bookmark\/table?lang=en&amp;bookmarkId=e2e1e28b-6c43-4665-ada8-262b7a902dd2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Italy<\/a> is in fourth place (16%), behind Estonia (22.4%) and Sweden (20.3%). Source: Eurostat \u00a9 European Union, 1995 &#8211; today, free re-use of data<\/p><\/div>\n<h5>Organic market boom<\/h5>\n<p>The growth of the sector is reflected in sales In 2020, the value of consumption in Europe marks <strong>\u20ac52 billion<\/strong> (44.8 in the EU), with a per capita expenditure of \u20ac63.3 (\u20ac101.8 in the 27 EU countries). About a third of the single market is covered by Germany (\u20ac14.99 billion). Sales are the most striking figures: driven by the <strong>Germany<\/strong> (+22.3%), 2020 sales recorded a <strong>growth rate of 14.9%<\/strong>, the highest in the decade.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In the period, says the Research Institute, &#8220;the organic markets in many countries exhibited <strong>double-digit growth<\/strong> due to the pandemic as people stayed home and began to cook more often.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Key factors such as health, the environment and <strong>climate change<\/strong>, all of which seem to be increasingly influencing consumer choices, are also playing a crucial role. &#8220;If this trend continues,&#8221; the researchers say, &#8220;production and processing have to keep pace. This is definitively demonstrated by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fibl.org\/en\/info-centre\/news\/global-organic-market-unprecedented-growth-in-2020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">global figure<\/a> which, in the first year of the pandemic, is worth <strong>\u20ac120 billion<\/strong>, \u20ac14 billion more than in 2019. <strong>United States<\/strong> remains the leading market with a countervalue of almost 50 billion euros. In total, the Planet&#8217;s organic farmland covers 75 million hectares, 4.1% more than the previous year.<\/p>\n<p>Almost half of the fields are located in <strong>Australia<\/strong> (35.7 million), the leading country in the ranking ahead of Argentina (4.5 million) and Uruguay (2.7).
