More than 500 million dollars support soil-damaging activities<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Every year, in the world, governments finance the destruction of the Planet by granting harmful public <strong>subsidies<\/strong> worth <strong>1,800 billion dollars<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earthtrack.net\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/EHS_Reform_Background_Report_fin.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a report<\/a> launched by <strong>The B Team and Business for Nature<\/strong> in recent weeks <a href=\"https:\/\/bteam.org\/our-thinking\/news\/study-governments-are-subsidizing-the-destruction-of-nature-to-the-tune-of-1-8-trillion-each-year\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has found<\/a>. The study, prepared by the association <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earthtrack.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Earth Track<\/a> and promoted by the two associations representing &#8220;a global coalition of companies seeking to stop biodiversity loss and promote sustainability is the first in over a decade to estimate the total value of environmentally harmful subsidies,\u201d writes Reuters.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\ud83d\udea8 Governments are subsidizing the destruction of nature\u2014to the tune of $1.8 trillion each year \ud83d\udea8<\/p>\n<p>New research commissioned by The B Team, with <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BfNCoalition?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@BfNCoalition<\/a>, estimates the total global value of environmentally harmful subsidies.<\/p>\n<p>Read the brief here: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/XMC5BaPgEy\">https:\/\/t.co\/XMC5BaPgEy<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/bjnDnCqr4P\">pic.twitter.com\/bjnDnCqr4P<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; The B Team (@thebteamhq) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/thebteamhq\/status\/1494209538530377735?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 17, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h5>Three sectors collect 80% of harmful subsidies<\/h5>\n<p>&#8220;Environmentally harmful subsidies are government programs that encourage unsustainable production or carbon-intensive consumption, harming nature through the depletion of natural resources and <strong>degradation of global ecosystems<\/strong>,&#8221; says B Team. &#8220;Moreover, they <strong>distort market prices<\/strong>, resource allocation and investment decisions; contribute to unfair competition; and create <strong>reputational risk<\/strong> for business.&#8221; The survey then calculated the value of support programs that negatively impact nature, climate and inequality.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>At the top of the list, with <strong>$640 billion<\/strong> in government support is the <strong>fossil<\/strong> sector. <strong>Agricultural sector<\/strong>, which receives <strong>$520 billion<\/strong> each year to support unsustainable activities that damage soil, pollute water and encourage <strong>deforestation<\/strong>, ranks second.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In third place (350 billion) is the<strong> water resources<\/strong> and wastewater management sector. In addition to these three industries, which receive 80% of estimated contributions, there is also the <strong>forest services<\/strong> market. Which, according to the survey, receives 155 billion a year in support.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"UFvXuFW45q\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/soil-water-agriculture-fao-solaw\/\">&#8220;Soil depletion in the last decade has been shocking and alarming&#8221;, FAO experts say<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;&#8220;Soil depletion in the last decade has been shocking and alarming&#8221;, FAO experts say&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/soil-water-agriculture-fao-solaw\/embed\/#?secret=HdbCVx0wVR#?secret=UFvXuFW45q\" data-secret=\"UFvXuFW45q\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Unsustainable agriculture under fire<\/h5>\n<p>The data on agriculture are aligned with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fao.org\/3\/cb6562en\/cb6562en.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FAO estimates<\/a> which, in September 2021, calculated the value of harmful subsidies for the sector at 470 billion (87% of total support to the industry). These subsidies &#8220;are inefficient, distort food prices, hurt people\u2019s health, degrade the environment, and are often inequitable,\u201d the U.N. organization <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/fao-agriculture-harmful-subsidies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>. <strong>FAO<\/strong> also estimated that the amount amount may triple to <strong>$1,759 billion<\/strong> by 2030.<\/p>\n<p>With the support to prices and exports and import duties, the FAO also noted, governments would in fact &#8220;are putting big agri-business ahead of smallholder farmers, a large share of whom are women,&#8221;. Global agriculture employs a huge number of small farmers including foresters, shepherds and workersfrom <strong>indigenous communities<\/strong>. The stakes, in any case, are very high. &#8220;Businesses rely on nature at every stage of the value chain, yet more than half of the world\u2019s total GDP\u2014<strong>$44 trillion<\/strong> of economic value generation\u2014is at moderate or severe risk due to\u202fnature loss&#8221; the association says.<\/p>\n<p>Activists&#8217; demands include the <strong>elimination of harmful subsidies<\/strong> and increased efforts to raise awareness of the issue in all sectors involved. As well as the development of international standards of transparency that require disclosure of support to market players. These topics will most likely be discussed at the next meeting of the <strong>UN Convention on Biological Diversity<\/strong>, that will take place in Kunming, China, from April 25 to May 8.
