Including a neonicotinoid causing large-scale adverse effects on bees.<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>In 2020 the <strong>UK<\/strong> sold abroad <strong>12,240 tons of pesticides<\/strong> still banned within its borders as they were deemed dangerous to health according to a joint investigation by Unearthed, the team of investigative journalists of <strong>Greenpeace<\/strong>, and the German NGO <strong>Public Eye<\/strong>. &#8220;Unearthed and Public Eye found that UK companies shipped products containing <strong>seven different banned agrochemicals<\/strong> and applied for permissions to export a further six \u2013 a much wider range of banned pesticides being exported from this country than previously seen,&#8221; says a <a href=\"https:\/\/unearthed.greenpeace.org\/2022\/02\/22\/bees-syngenta-paraquat-uk-exports\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The findings identify &#8220;a much wider range of banned pesticides being exported than previously seen&#8221;. And they have been confirmed by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), the body which regulates UK exports of prohibited chemicals.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Breaking: A new <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/UE?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@UE<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/publiceye_ch?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@publiceye_ch<\/a> investigation has uncovered shipments of thousands of tonnes of banned pesticides out of the UK in 2020<\/p>\n<p>The British government has refused to follow Europe&#39;s lead and commit to ending these exports<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/u3lPaGUwTI\">https:\/\/t.co\/u3lPaGUwTI<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Unearthed (@UE) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/UE\/status\/1496032511410987009?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 22, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h5>Seven pesticides (plus 6 others) in the spotlight<\/h5>\n<p>The list of products includes <strong>herbicides<\/strong> Paraquat, Diquat and Asulam, <strong>insecticides<\/strong> Imidacloprid and Cyhalothrin, and <strong>fungicides<\/strong> Chlorothalonil and Propiconazole. Paraquat, in particular, &#8220;is one of the most acutely toxic herbicides in the world. It has caused <strong>tens of thousands of poisoning deaths<\/strong> worldwide, and has been found by scientists to increase the risk of <strong>Parkinson\u2019s disease<\/strong> through low-level chronic exposure.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Propiconazole<\/strong>, which has been banned in the UK in 2019, is also a major concern. As it was classified as a \u201ctoxic to reproduction\u201d since it&#8217;s capable of <strong>harming babies in the womb<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The list of pesticides for which companies have applied for foreign trade permits but have not been shipped in 2020 includes products based on 1,3-dichloropropene, Desmedipham, Propanil, Chlorpropham, Dichlobenil and Iprodione.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"PYqjSGHgPy\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/agricolture-usa-pesticides\/\">Pesticides rule in U.S. farmland as 146,000 MT of banned chemicals are in place<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Pesticides rule in U.S. farmland as 146,000 MT of banned chemicals are in place&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/agricolture-usa-pesticides\/embed\/#?secret=bCwkfmDjc6#?secret=PYqjSGHgPy\" data-secret=\"PYqjSGHgPy\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>A dangerous affair for bees<\/h5>\n<p>Imidacloprid, a product which is still regularly exported despite a ban on domestic use imposed by the British authorities in 2018, is also under fire. The substance falls into the broader category of <strong>neonicotinoids<\/strong>, which have been deemed<a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/news\/pesticidi-tossici-api\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> highly dangerous to bees<\/a>. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ehn.org\/pesticide-toxicity-2652983639\/pollinator-and-aquatic-invertebrate-loss\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a recent study<\/a> by the University of Koblenz and Landau, in fact, the toxicity of 381 pesticides to <strong>bees<\/strong>, other pollinating insects and aquatic invertebrates has more than doubled over the past 25 years. With some seriously consequences.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Three out of four crops across the globe producing fruits or seeds for human use as food depend, at least in part, on pollinators&#8221;, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fao.org\/sustainability\/news\/detail\/es\/c\/1276259\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according<\/a>\u00a0to <strong>FAO<\/strong>. However, &#8220;The diversity of bees and other <strong>pollinators<\/strong> worldwide is falling. Destinations included many <strong>middle-income and low-income countries<\/strong> such as Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Ecuador, Guatemala and India. The highest numbers were recorded from shipments of Paraquat by <strong>Syngenta<\/strong>. &#8220;The company still manufactures the weedkiller at its factory in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, although its use has been banned in this country since 2007,&#8221; the authors say.<\/p>\n<p>Besides the Swiss corporation (which has been acquired by ChemChina in 2017), the investigation identified four other companies involved in the export of pesticides: the corporation <strong>UPL<\/strong> (India) and <strong>NuFarm<\/strong> (Australia) and the chemical companies <strong>Inovyn<\/strong> (which is controlled by the British firm Ineos) and <strong>Hockley International<\/strong>, a company based in Stockport, Greater Manchester.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"vdXBDTvkw2\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/usa-chemicals-meat-soil\/\">Chemicals in meat and soil raise concern in US, The Guardian writes<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Chemicals in meat and soil raise concern in US, The Guardian writes&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/usa-chemicals-meat-soil\/embed\/#?secret=knFSC4o3yb#?secret=vdXBDTvkw2\" data-secret=\"vdXBDTvkw2\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><strong>Strong condemnation from the U.N.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Finally, <strong>Marcos A. Orellana<\/strong>, U.N. Special Rapporteur on the implications for human rights of the environmentally sound management and disposal of hazardous substances and wastes, has given a strong condemnation. &#8220;The UK,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/article\/britain-selling-death-risk-pesticides-around-world-despite-ban-at-home-6td2rkx95\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">he said<\/a>, \u201cis allowing an abhorrent practice <strong>that causes harm and suffering to people<\/strong> and nature in other countries\u201d.
