US authorities&#8217; policy remains controversial, according to the British newspaper<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>For the moment it&#8217;s just one &#8220;isolated&#8221; incident, but given previous accusations concerns remain. In Michigan, <strong>USA<\/strong>, local authorities have targeted local <strong>beef<\/strong>, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/public-interest\/2022\/01\/advisory-warns-of-pfas-in-beef-from-michigan-cattle-farm.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">was found to be contaminated<\/a> by the excessive presence of some notoriously dangerous chemicals. The event currently involves a single company that supplies local schools and the attention is focused on notorious <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Per-_and_polyfluoroalkyl_substances\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PFAS<\/a> or <strong>Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances<\/strong>, the so-called <em>forever chemicals<\/em> wich are known to be persistent and harmful as they can infiltrate in soil thus entering the agriculture and livestock cycle.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The news comes after consumer groups in 2019 warned that using PFAS-laden <strong>sewage sludge<\/strong> as fertilizer would contaminate dairy, beef, crops and other food products,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2022\/feb\/11\/michigan-beef-dangerous-levels-forever-chemicals?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">says<\/a> <strong>The Guardian<\/strong>. &#8220;However, at the time a Michigan agricultural regulator publicly assured the state\u2019s dairy farmers her agency wouldn\u2019t test milk for the toxic chemicals as they didn\u2019t want to inflict economic pain on <strong>the $15bn industry<\/strong>, she said&#8221;. Today, the British newspaper continues, &#8220;consumer groups say their fears may have come true.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\u201cWe think this is a pretty unique situation,\u201d said Abby Hendershott, director of Michigan PFAS Action Response Team. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/XkpSa0QX7I\">https:\/\/t.co\/XkpSa0QX7I<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Garret M. Ellison (@garretellison) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/garretellison\/status\/1487149923212668931?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 28, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h5>The story so far<\/h5>\n<p>The event, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/public-interest\/2022\/01\/advisory-warns-of-pfas-in-beef-from-michigan-cattle-farm.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S. media<\/a>, dates back to late January when the Michigan departments of health and agriculture issued a joint alert about the dangers of prolonged consumption of beef from <strong>Grostic Cattle Company<\/strong>, a century-old local firm. Analysis of the samples, in fact, revealed a presence of between 0.98 and 2.48 parts per billion of a substance known as <strong>perfluorooctanesulfonate<\/strong>. The measure represents only a formal &#8220;call for caution.&#8221; Since the concentration levels were not found to be high enough to force a product recall. However, authorities noted that long-term consumption of this meat could pose a <strong>health risk<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The problem is said to be caused by the contamination of <strong>biosolids<\/strong>, the final products of the municipal wastewater treatment process. These <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2571-8789\/4\/3\/48\/pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sewage sludge<\/a>, as the ones purchased by Grostic from 2010 to 2015, are routinely used as fertilizers.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"0ayv8PoOmk\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/fao-soil-pollution-report\/\">Soil pollution is responsible for 20% of agricultural productivity loss, FAO warns<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Soil pollution is responsible for 20% of agricultural productivity loss, FAO warns&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/fao-soil-pollution-report\/embed\/#?secret=TD3lvaoHzL#?secret=0ayv8PoOmk\" data-secret=\"0ayv8PoOmk\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Harmful chemicals<\/h5>\n<p>The detected substance belongs to the broader category of <strong>perfluoroalkyl chemicals<\/strong>, which are used in the treatment of textiles, paper, food packaging and much more. Their wide use, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/pfas\/pfas-explained\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">says<\/a>, contributes to their broad prevalence. So much that &#8220;many PFAS are found in the blood of people and animals all over the world.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Over the years, The Guardian says, their presence has also been detected &#8220;in <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/agricultural-industry\/agricolture-usa-pesticides\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pesticides<\/a>, rain, packaging and water used on crops.&#8221; And testing &#8220;is increasingly finding the chemicals in vegetables, seafood, meat, dairy and processed foods.&#8221; These chemicals, moreover, &#8220;are also linked to a range of <strong>serious health problems<\/strong> like cancer, liver disease, kidney issues, high cholesterol, birth defects and decreased immunity.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"gjjoXOUNdS\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/agricolture-usa-pesticides\/\">Pesticides rule in U.S. farmland as 146,000 MT of banned chemicals are in place<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Pesticides rule in U.S. farmland as 146,000 MT of banned chemicals are in place&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/agricolture-usa-pesticides\/embed\/#?secret=ibKd5PJLRK#?secret=gjjoXOUNdS\" data-secret=\"gjjoXOUNdS\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>American authorities under fire<\/h5>\n<p>Not surprisingly, the <strong>US Food and Drug Administration<\/strong> has been hit by controversy. The agency, in fact, &#8220;only conducts limited annual testing and recently adjusted its methodology so it will only catch what consumer groups say are extremely high contamination levels, and <strong>ignore relatively low<\/strong> to moderate levels that can still pose a health risk,&#8221; the Guardian writes.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, &#8220;In 2019, the FDA initially found 182 food samples to be contaminated with PFAS, but, after <strong>changing its methodology<\/strong> part way through the study, that figure dropped to 78, drawing accusations that it was intentionally covering up contamination.&#8221; Today, food <strong>packaging<\/strong> containing PFAS is still legal in the United States.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A contamination event in Michigan raises some alarm about dangerous chemicals infiltrating the soil and harming the food chain.
