In the last decade, in fact, the sector has been responsible for the destruction of <strong>1,180 square kilometers<\/strong> of forest, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/unearthed.greenpeace.org\/2022\/02\/10\/deforestation-free-soya-farmers-amazon-destruction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a study <\/a>released in recent days by the Brazilian NGO I<strong>nstituto Centro de Vida<\/strong>, <strong>Greenpeace&#8217;s Unearthed<\/strong> investigation center and the <strong>Bureau of Investigative Journalism<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Deforestation, the authors explain, took place in the state of Mato Grosso where, between 2009 and 2019, soya companies opened new spaces for other crops or to provide grazing land for livestock. &#8220;The majority of this deforestation was illegal,&#8221; the study says.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">ICYMI: We revealed some 1,200 sq km of Amazon rainforest has been razed on Brazilian soya farms &#8211; and that those farmers can still badge their soya as &quot;deforestation-free&quot; <\/p>\n<p>Soya from the worst-hit areas is regularly shipped to the UK &amp; EU for animal feed<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Hs91azhQgA\">https:\/\/t.co\/Hs91azhQgA<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Unearthed (@UE) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/UE\/status\/1491843611696246787?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 10, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h5>The 2006 moratorium has proven useless for the Amazon<\/h5>\n<p>In 2006, a number of major European companies signed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2019\/dec\/03\/uk-firms-urge-brazil-to-stop-amazon-deforestation-for-soy-production\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">moratorium<\/a> to protect the Amazon. The agreement <strong>banned the sale of soya<\/strong> grown on land deforested after 2008. The restrictions, however, do not apply to other products such as beef and other crops.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>That means large <strong>agribusiness<\/strong> players could keep <strong>expanding the land<\/strong> under their control to extend crops and livestock while continuing to sell deforestation-free certified soya on the market.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;The findings undermine claims by some <strong>global meatpackers<\/strong>, animal feed companies and supermarkets that soya is no longer directly linked to Amazon destruction,&#8221; the researchers explain.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"0EH7GvTmP8\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/fao-nasa-google-deforestation-data\/\">FAO, NASA and Google join forces to beat deforestation through data power<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;FAO, NASA and Google join forces to beat deforestation through data power&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/fao-nasa-google-deforestation-data\/embed\/#?secret=EOeFQQ9fAe#?secret=0EH7GvTmP8\" data-secret=\"0EH7GvTmP8\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Certified soya indirectly causes deforestation<\/h5>\n<p>Analyzing satellite data, which are known to be <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/innovation-technology\/fao-nasa-google-deforestation-data\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a valuable resource<\/a> for land status surveys, the authors found that <strong>only 7% of the deforested land<\/strong> in Mato Grosso in 2018 was allocated to soybean cultivation. Soya crops, however, have been expanding in the Amazon, especially in previously deforested land.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That expansion <strong>can still indirectly cause fresh deforestation<\/strong>,&#8221; the authors explain. &#8220;As ranchers sell up to farmers at a profit and move deeper into the forest, where land is cheaper.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"ex9uf9VmwZ\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/ft-amazon-brazil-funds\/\">Investment funds don&#8217;t leave Brazil despite Amazon deforestation, FT writes<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Investment funds don&#8217;t leave Brazil despite Amazon deforestation, FT writes&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/ft-amazon-brazil-funds\/embed\/#?secret=m7k0219dtH#?secret=ex9uf9VmwZ\" data-secret=\"ex9uf9VmwZ\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>The responsibilities of the US and Europe<\/h5>\n<p>The researchers&#8217; investigations extended to the large companies buying products from the Amazon region. These include U.S. corporations <strong>Cargill<\/strong>, which also operates in the European market, and <strong>Bunge<\/strong>, which supplies the Spanish market. &#8220;In 2021, Spain imported <strong>878,000 tonnes of soya<\/strong> from municipalities with at least 7 sq km of hidden deforestation on soya farms,&#8221; says the research.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, in 2020, &#8220;the UK imported <strong>more than 140,000 tonnes<\/strong> of soya from municipalities with at least 7 sq kms of hidden deforestation on soya farms, and about 50,000 tonnes of corn \u2013 also used for animal feed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"sjdZtZWZXg\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/indigenous-communities-deforestation\/\">&#8220;Indigenous communities are the most effective shield against deforestation&#8221;<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;&#8220;Indigenous communities are the most effective shield against deforestation&#8221;&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/indigenous-communities-deforestation\/embed\/#?secret=hmatIB3UEx#?secret=sjdZtZWZXg\" data-secret=\"sjdZtZWZXg\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>A growing trend<\/h5>\n<p>The study&#8217;s findings come in a highly troubling time for the Amazon. After experiencing widespread deforestation <strong>between 2000 and 2004<\/strong> that led to the destruction of <strong>nearly 28,000 square kilometers<\/strong> of land, the region has enjoyed years of quiet stability. From 2004 to 2012, in fact, deforestation dropped 84%.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;But in recent years deforestation has been climbing steeply again,&#8221; the authors say. This was encouraged &#8220;by President <strong>Jair Bolsonaro<\/strong>\u2019s anti-conservationist rhetoric and policies.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The problem, perhaps, is not so much the lack of official commitment. Instead rules enforcement has proved very weak. &#8220;Facing international pressure from the United States and Europe, Brazil last year pledged to end illegal deforestation by 2028 and signed a global pact to stop all forest destruction by 2030,&#8221; Reuters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/environment\/deforestation-brazils-amazon-rainforest-hits-record-january-high-2022-02-11\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">says<\/a>. &#8220;Soon after those commitments, Inpe released data showing that deforestation in <strong>2021<\/strong> in the Brazilian Amazon hit the <strong>highest point in 15 years<\/strong>. The preliminary data for January shows the destruction is continuing to mount.&#8221; In first month of 2022 the Amazon lost 430 square kilometers of forest.
