In Africa, they also perform better than protected areas<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In the world, areas managed by <strong>indigenous<\/strong> people experience a lower deforestation rate compared to other tropical territories, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sheffield.ac.uk\/news\/global-study-reveals-indigenous-lands-protect-tropical-forests-deforestation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">research<\/a> by the <strong>University of Shieffield<\/strong> said. The survey, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41893-021-00815-2?proof=t%2525C2%2525A0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published<\/a> in Nature Sustainability, has focused on several territories in Asia, Latin America and Africa where conservation efforts by indigenous communities has generally proved no less effective than those of the authorities controlling protected areas. The destruction of forest areas, says the study, is causing increasing concern. At <strong>COP26<\/strong> in Glasgow, governments pledged to allocate <strong>$19 billion<\/strong> to stop the process by 2030.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Briefly, we found that across the tropics, Indigenous lands have lower deforestation and degradation than comparable non-protected areas. (2\/9) <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/S16lT1FJL1\">pic.twitter.com\/S16lT1FJL1<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Jocelyne Sze (@jocelynesze) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jocelynesze\/status\/1463924439893037060?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 25, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h5>Up to a quarter less deforestation on native lands<\/h5>\n<p>By using satellite data, an increasingly <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/fao-nasa-google-deforestation-data\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">crucial resource<\/a> in the study and in the fight against deforestation, and comparing similar areas in terms of morphological and geographical characteristics, the researchers were able to collect some clear data. In areas under the control of native populations, the study reports, there was less deforestation. With <strong>a reduction between 17% and 26%<\/strong> compared to the global average recorded in other areas. Disaggregated data are even more interesting.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIn <strong>Africa<\/strong>, Indigenous lands preserved forest cover better than <strong>protected areas<\/strong>, which had similar levels of deforestation to unprotected areas\u201d, <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/indigenous-lands-have-less-deforestation-than-state-managed-protected-areas-in-most-of-tropics-172812\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">explains<\/a> <strong>Jocelyne Sze<\/strong>, lead author from the University of Sheffield\u2019s Grantham Centre for Sustainable Futures.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Moreover, she says, \u201cIn the <strong>Asia-Pacific<\/strong> region, spanning from India to Fiji, deforestation rates were similar on Indigenous lands and in protected areas. Even here, indigenous communities show some ability to reduce deforestation (<strong>-17%<\/strong> compared to unprotected lands). But with less efficacy than authorities managing protected areas (<strong>-28%<\/strong> compared to rates recorded in unprotected territories). \u201cThis is fairly surprising\u201d, the researcher says, \u201cas a lot of earlier research (in <strong>Brazil, Panama and Peru<\/strong>) found that Indigenous territories <strong>perform better in protecting forests than state-managed<\/strong> protected areas\u201d.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"kNqBRS8Qv9\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/indigenous-drones-deforestation\/\">Smartphones and drones help indigenous communities fight deforestation<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Smartphones and drones help indigenous communities fight deforestation&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/indigenous-drones-deforestation\/embed\/#?secret=kNqBRS8Qv9\" data-secret=\"kNqBRS8Qv9\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>&#8220;Protected areas are often created with human rights abuses&#8221;<\/h5>\n<p>The research shows the importance of the underestimated efforts by <strong>native populations<\/strong> in the defense of their territories. The <strong>Cof\u00e1n<\/strong> community in the Ecuadorian Amazon, for example, constantly monitors its land and has long established <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservationandsociety.org.in\/\/article.asp?issn=0972-4923;year=2021;volume=19;issue=4;spage=259;epage=270;aulast=Esbach\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">regular meetings<\/a> to make decisions on which crops to suspend and how to regulate the hunting of endangered animals.<\/p>\n<p>Protected areas, on the other hand, have their <strong>dark side<\/strong>. &#8220;Protected areas have largely been able to reduce deforestation\u201d Jocelyne Sze says. \u201cBut their creation can also mean the <strong>eviction of communities<\/strong> which have lived in forests for generations, barring them from resources and sacred sites\u201d.
