A strategy to restore land by reducing the weight of waste<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Restoring contaminated soil by disaggregating toxic substances and basically solving the problem of disposal: this is the mission of <strong>mushrooms<\/strong>, the unsuspected leading players in an <strong>experiment<\/strong> that will hopefully set a new standard. The story comes from Marathon County, Wisconsin, where a group of researchers has started a apparently prohibitive mission which involves the local university and the city department of waste management.<\/p>\n<p>The focus of the experiment? Worst thing you can imagine: an <strong>oil-loaded<\/strong> block of land. In November, researchers began growing good quality fungi on it. With surprising results.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"JjqRTfMizT\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/fao-soil-pollution-report\/\">Soil pollution is responsible for 20% of agricultural productivity loss, FAO warns<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Soil pollution is responsible for 20% of agricultural productivity loss, FAO warns&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/fao-soil-pollution-report\/embed\/#?secret=JjqRTfMizT\" data-secret=\"JjqRTfMizT\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Researchers&#8217; hope<\/h5>\n<p>&#8220;Our control soils, if you dig into it, it smells like oil,&#8221; Alex Thomas, a <strong>University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point<\/strong> researcher involved in the study, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wpr.org\/clean-contaminated-soil-central-wisconsin-pilot-project-tries-growing-mushrooms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">explained<\/a> to a local radio station. Where mushrooms\u00a0grew, however, the soil &#8220;came back smelling really clean \u2014 to me it almost smelled like baby powder. That&#8217;s an early indication that hopefully we&#8217;ll see some results.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Olfaction, of course, doesn&#8217;t provide definitive proof. But scientists now believe that laboratory analysis can confirm the most optimistic hypothesis. The hope, in short, is that fungi could complete their task. That means &#8220;cleaning&#8221; soil from <strong>harmful substances<\/strong> that could have made it unuseful.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"5Rraaz5kr7\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/beer-soil-crop-yields\/\">Beer by-products are good for soil as crop yields increase 15%<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Beer by-products are good for soil as crop yields increase 15%&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/beer-soil-crop-yields\/embed\/#?secret=5Rraaz5kr7\" data-secret=\"5Rraaz5kr7\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>More mushrooms means less waste<\/h5>\n<p>But how does the <strong>natural remediation<\/strong> process work? &#8220;Petroleum is a fossil fuel, made of carbon,&#8221; local radio station WPR reported. &#8220;Mushrooms can feed on the organic compounds and break down the lignins that bond them. Previous studies have shown that they not only remove the petroleum-based contaminants from the soil, but also <strong>break them down<\/strong> in such a way that even the mushrooms themselves are nontoxic. You wouldn&#8217;t want to eat them, but they can simply be composted back into the now-clean soil.&#8221; This does not occur for all composts. But even in the most critical cases, there are some benefits anyway.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In other uses, such as soil contaminated with <strong>heavy metals<\/strong>, the mushrooms would become toxic materials that require disposal at the landfill\u201d, WPR says. \u201cBut they would take <strong>a fraction of the space<\/strong> required to dispose of contaminated soil.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Thanks to this process it is therefore possible to reduce <strong>disposal costs<\/strong>. A practice that is still being researched. &#8220;Fungi are nature\u2019s most vigorous agents for decomposition,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/geographical.co.uk\/nature\/climate\/item\/3980-mycoremediation-using-mushrooms-to-clean-up-after-humans-could-be-an-under-utilised-opportunity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">says<\/a> the British Royal Geographical Society&#8217;s journal. &#8220;For millions of years, they have evolved to exploit the detritus of other species, recycling <strong>nutrients through the ecosystem<\/strong>. The only organisms on Earth that decompose wood, their ability to extend through soil in filamentous mycelia, excreting digestive enzymes, allows them to adaptively decompose tough materials\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Over the years, the journal says, there have been many experiments. Mycoremediation has also been used to decontaminate soils from <strong>pesticides<\/strong>. In 2017, moreover, &#8220;Chinese researchers isolated a fungus capable of <strong>digesting polyster polyurethane<\/strong>.&#8221; The effectiveness of these techniques, however, still appears variable and seems to be conditioned by many factors.
