Expanding protected areas and raising more funds<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>17,500 species of trees or <strong>30% of the total<\/strong> are at risk of <strong>extinction<\/strong> according to the researchers of <strong>Botanic Gardens Conservation International<\/strong> (BGCI), a British organization founded in1987. The verdict, expressed in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgci.org\/our-work\/projects-and-case-studies\/global-tree-assessment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a study<\/a> released in September, re-emerges as a powerful warning in these days after another alarm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2021\/nov\/18\/deforestation-in-brazils-amazon-rises-by-more-than-a-fifth-in-a-year\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">was raised<\/a> on Amazon deforestation, which recorded the highest acceleration rate since 2006 (+22% between August 2020 and July 2021). Human activity weighs heavily as about 20 percent of species, the survey notes, &#8220;are directly used for <strong>food, fuel, timber, medicines, horticulture<\/strong>, and more\u201d. Morover \u201cThe greatest threats facing trees include habitat loss from agriculture and grazing, followed by over-exploitation from <strong>logging and harvesting<\/strong>. The report finds that 1 in 3 trees currently harvested for timber are threatened with extinction\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>According to the researchers, agriculture impacts <strong>29 percent of vulnerable species<\/strong>, timber industry 27 percent while grazing expansion affects 14 percent of threatened tree varieties. Trees, in fact, are increasingly threatened by global warming, which alters environmental conditions and reduces the extent of the plants&#8217; natural habitat. &#8220;At least 180 tree species are directly threatened by <strong>sea level rise<\/strong> and severe weather events,\u201d say the authors. \u201cThis threat is most severe to island species, including magnolias in the Caribbean. An increased occurrence of <strong>fire<\/strong> is a major threat to trees in Madagascar, and has also been identified as a risk to US species of oak and Nothofagus trees in Australia and South America\u201d.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"TMYTlLYPUw\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/deforestation-indonesia-norway\/\">Climate activists worried as Indonesia leaves anti-deforestation deal with Norway<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Climate activists worried as Indonesia leaves anti-deforestation deal with Norway&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/deforestation-indonesia-norway\/embed\/#?secret=TMYTlLYPUw\" data-secret=\"TMYTlLYPUw\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Brazil has the worst numbers<\/h5>\n<p>The survey highlighted the variation of the trend at national level. With 1,788 endangered species out of 8,847 hosted, <strong>Brazil<\/strong> is the world most endangered country in terms of absolute numbers. In relative terms, <strong>Malaysia<\/strong> has the worst record, since its vulnerable trees are about a quarter of the total hosted species: 1,295 out of 5,422. Very similar numbers for <strong>Indonesia<\/strong>, global leader in the production of <strong>palm oil<\/strong>: here researcher has found 1,306 endangered species out of 5,716,or 23% of the total amount. <strong>China<\/strong>&#8216;s figures are also worrying with 890 out of 4,608. Taking into account the native species only, <strong>Europe<\/strong> shows an extinction risk for 58% of its indigenous varieties.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"k3AXi4HIfv\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/climate-trees-cities\/\">Trees (not air conditioning) will save cities from burning weather<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Trees (not air conditioning) will save cities from burning weather&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/climate-trees-cities\/embed\/#?secret=k3AXi4HIfv\" data-secret=\"k3AXi4HIfv\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Five actions to curb extinction<\/h5>\n<p>Finally, the researchers made some proposals for decision-makers and experts. <strong>Five crucial actions<\/strong> have been identified:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Extend protected <strong>area coverage<\/strong> for threatened tree species that are currently not-well represented in protected areas.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Ensure that all globally threatened tree species, where possible, are conserved in botanic garden and seed bank collections.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Increase availability of Government and corporate <strong>funding<\/strong> for threatened tree species.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Expand tree planting schemes, and ensure the targeted planting of threatened and native species.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Increase <strong>global collaboration<\/strong> to tackle tree extinction, by participating in international efforts such as the Global Conservation Consortia.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cTree species are the backbone of the natural ecosystem\u201d, researchers say. \u201cThey <strong>store 50% of the world\u2019s terrestrial carbon<\/strong> and provide a buffer from extreme weather, such hurricanes and tsunamis\u201d. At the same time, \u201cMany threatened tree species provide the habitat and food for millions of other species of birds, mammals, amphibians, reptiles, insects and microorganisms\u201d. That is why, authors say, that \u201cThe extinction of a single tree species could cause <strong>a domino effect<\/strong>, catalysing the loss of many other species\u201d.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From Asia to Europe 30% of trees species could disappear, says BGCI.
