The study, which was unveiled at <strong>COP26<\/strong> in Glasgow, highlights the potential of a key sector on the path to ecological transition.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We must enable smallholder farmers to adapt and to benefit economically through the provision of environmental services,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fao.org\/newsroom\/detail\/climate-action-in-agribusiness-could-reduce-emissions-by-up-to-7-per-cent\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> <strong>Mohamed Manssouri<\/strong>, Director of FAO&#8217;s Investment Centre. \u201cNow is the time to grasp this vital opportunity to reduce emissions and increase carbon sequestration, while restoring biodiversity, supporting health and nutrition and generating new business opportunities through food and land-use systems.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">While agri-food sectors emit around 1\/3 of total greenhouse gas emissions, they are also extremely vulnerable to climate change.<\/p>\n<p>Green &amp; climate-resilient agriculture must be part of the climate solution.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FAO?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@FAO<\/a> is working to make it happen \ud83d\udc49<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/1vpel8OMPm\">https:\/\/t.co\/1vpel8OMPm<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/COP26?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#COP26<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/0iV30hyBkf\">pic.twitter.com\/0iV30hyBkf<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; FAO (@FAO) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FAO\/status\/1457617851616047104?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 8, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h5>Agriculture generates up to 37% of human emissions<\/h5>\n<p>An ambivalent relationship has always existed between agriculture and climate change. The contribution of the sector to human emissions, says the study, ranges from <strong>21% to 37%<\/strong>. A very <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/agricultural-industry\/fao-food-system-emissions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">significant impact<\/a> whose importance has only fully emerged in recent years after having been historically underestimated. But the sector, according to the study, &#8220;is also a victim of emissions\u201d. Farmers, in fact, \u201care often among the first witnesses to climate change\u201d. Mentre \u201crising temperatures, changing rainfall patterns and supply chain disruptions are already impacting food production, undermining global efforts to end hunger\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The good news, however, is that &#8220;agriculture sector is uniquely placed to be <strong>part of the carbon neutral solution<\/strong> through reducing emissions, while maximizing its potential to act as a <strong>carbon sink<\/strong> by absorbing more carbon from the atmosphere than it releases.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"noBa9Ilk38\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/new-york-passes-soil-health-act\/\">Climate-friendly agriculture: New York passes Soil Health Act<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Climate-friendly agriculture: New York passes Soil Health Act&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/new-york-passes-soil-health-act\/embed\/#?secret=noBa9Ilk38\" data-secret=\"noBa9Ilk38\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Climate impact may decrease by 7%<\/h5>\n<p>While waiting for the final report that will be published early next year, the anticipations of the FAO\/EBRD study are promising. According to the analysis, in fact, a <strong>better management of agricultural land<\/strong> and interventions designed to support the <strong>carbon sequestration<\/strong> can result in a <strong>3% to 7%<\/strong> emissions decrease within the sector.<\/p>\n<p>The underlying goal, the survey says, remains climate neutrality, i.e., balancing the amount of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere with the amount removed. In recent years, many efforts have been done. Some <strong>problems<\/strong>, however, are still clear. First of all, carbon neutrality interventions are still <strong>voluntary<\/strong>. Moreover, the results achieved are often self-certified without any independent validation. Finally, the costs of interventions are extremely variable and particularly high for small businesses. Acting now, in any case, is crucial. First, governments must set key targets for neutrality; second, tools and methods for calculating the climate footprint must be improved. Next, the <strong>private<\/strong> sector needs to further develop its governance of the targets, and the public sector needs to provide support for <strong>decarbonization<\/strong> efforts, especially when undertaken by small companies. In addition to deploying multibillion-dollar resources, the researchers say, individuals can achieve substantial benefits from their efforts.
