That&#8217; s the mission of <strong>Chinese researchers<\/strong>, who have been working for over a decade to open a new frontier in the conversion of the most arid lands. The latest update has come in recent months when <strong>Zhao Chaohua<\/strong>, deputy dean of the Institute of Desert Ecology, Chongqing Jiaotong University, in central China, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.app.com.pk\/global\/chinese-team-turning-desert-into-soil-wants-to-cooperate-with-pakistan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> he&#8217;s ready to cooperate with <strong>Pakistani<\/strong> authorities to further develop the project. The goal is still the same: to tackle a problem <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/investigation\/soil-sos-here-are-the-enemies-that-are-robbing-it-of-its-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">driven by climate change<\/a> that currently affects <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unccd.int\/sites\/default\/files\/inline-files\/Quick%20Facts%20on%20drylands%2C%20deserts%2C%20desertification%20and%20land%20degradation_0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">167 nations<\/a> worldwide.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KTpaJn22w4I\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h5>Cellulose is the key element<\/h5>\n<p>The secret weapon is a paste made from plant cellulose that <a href=\"https:\/\/interestingengineering.com\/how-is-china-turning-deserts-into-arable-lands\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">scientists say<\/a> can improve sand&#8217;s ability to retain those <strong>elements essential<\/strong> to life&#8217;s development. &#8220;After the evaporation of the water content in the paste\u201d, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/309745628_Desert_Soilization_An_Eco-Mechanical_Solution_to_Desertification\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the research<\/a>, \u201cthe sand will transform into a solid state (dry \u201csoil\u201d). &#8216;Soilized&#8217; sand possesses the <strong>eco-mechanical attributes<\/strong> of natural soil\u201d. Five years later, the results look very promising. &#8220;In 2017, we planted some hardy plants,&#8221; said Zhao to Pakistani APP news agency. &#8220;After these sprouted, we stopped irrigation. Chinese researchers, in particular, have successfully applied the cellulose-based paste in other areas of the country such as the provinces of Xinjiang and Sichuan and also in <strong>Africa and the Middle East<\/strong>. If long-term results will confirm the efficacy of the procedure, scientists will have one more tool to fight desertification. Which, <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/central-asia-risks-becoming-a-hyperarid-desert-in-the-near-future-148703\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to estimates<\/a>, threatens the safety of half a billion people in <strong>Central Asia<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers also hope to offer new solutions in the future by further developing the technique.
