Global food is searching for a balance while the production system &#8220;is the primary driver of <strong>biodiversity loss<\/strong>,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/emf.thirdlight.com\/link\/TheBigFoodRedsignReport\/@\/preview\/1?o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">says the study<\/a>. And some consumer products have an abnormal role in this: &#8220;40% of agricultural land use is influenced by the top 10 Fast-moving consumer goods companies (FMCGs) and retailers&#8221;. In short, we need to change all of this. It&#8217;s time &#8220;to create a food system that is distributed, <strong>diverse<\/strong>, and inclusive.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\u2153 of global GHGs and 50% of human-induced <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/biodiversity?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#biodiversity<\/a> loss comes from the food industry. <\/p>\n<p>What if food could help to tackle climate change and build diversity? In this context we must now pursue strong policies for a sustainable food system. &#8220;FMCGs and retailers can better support <strong>farmer<\/strong> livelihoods, by not only strengthening their resilience to shocks but also helping them to increase total food output, diversify their income streams, improve their profitability (after a transition phase), and provide health benefits.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>These goals, the report says, can only be achieved through food design. Which basically means to define what is eaten, what ingredients are grown and how they are produced. The first step is to expand the <strong>variety of supplies<\/strong> to allow for partial substitution of high-impact ingredients. But this is just the beginning.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kjr3zkpC8UE\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h5>The solution is working on the ingredients<\/h5>\n<p>To reshape the structure of the supply chain, the study says, we need to follow <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/circular-bioeconomy-a-network-to-promote-it-launched-in-brussels\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the principles of circular economy<\/a>. Which essentially means doing four things:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Incorporating a <strong>broader range of ingredients<\/strong> like different kind of sweeteners, for example, such as palm, carob, coconut and stevia instead of just sugar cane.<\/li>\n<li>Shifting from higher impact crops to <strong>lower impact crops<\/strong>, which means switching from conventionally produced animal proteins to plant proteins, for instance.<\/li>\n<li>Catching new opportunities from <strong>commodity upcycling<\/strong> innovations (\u201cThe USD 46 billion <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/daphneewingchow\/2021\/05\/31\/upcycled-food-is-the-coolest-trend-you-probably-never-heard-of\/?sh=73994e362f0a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">upcycled food market<\/a> is projected to grow at 5% annually\u201d, the report says).<\/li>\n<li>Betting on regenerative production according to different disciplines such as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fao.org\/conservation-agriculture\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">conservation agriculture<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fao.org\/agroecology\/home\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">agroecology<\/a>, for example, \u201cwhile generating significant climate and biodiversity benefits\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"6Fik1YGTfn\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/news\/altieri-agroecologia-suolo\/\">Salute del suolo e colture sostenibili. &#8220;Con l&#8217;agroecologia una transizione per il bene del Pianeta&#8221;<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Salute del suolo e colture sostenibili. &#8220;Con l&#8217;agroecologia una transizione per il bene del Pianeta&#8221;&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/news\/altieri-agroecologia-suolo\/embed\/#?secret=6Fik1YGTfn\" data-secret=\"6Fik1YGTfn\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Less emissions, more biodiversity<\/h5>\n<p>The benefits of circular food design, the researchers say, are clear. By applying the four strategies on three categories of ingredients &#8211; wheat, dairy products and potatoes &#8211; <strong>in the EU and UK<\/strong>, according to the study, it is possible to halve the loss of biodiversity and double the overall production.
