The discover is showing once again the importance of soil ecosystem analysis<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A previously unknown member of the <strong>soil bacteria<\/strong> family could prove useful in the fight against cancer and beyond. The discovery, made public in the summer by researchers at the public University of Los Ba\u00f1os, <strong>Philippines<\/strong>, still awaits further confirmation. But the preliminary results are encouraging. In this case the attention is focused on a particular variety of streptomycete, a microorganism found at the <strong>Mayon volcano<\/strong>, in the north of the country. In recent months, researchers from Los Ba\u00f1os have identified and tested <strong>30 different species of bacteria<\/strong> found in the soil and discovered interesting antibiotic properties in 13 of them. One strain in particular, classified as streptomycete <strong>A1-08<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/cnnphilippines.com\/news\/2021\/8\/4\/Mayon-soils-bacteria-antibiotic-anticancer-properties.html?_=1628045131495&amp;fbclid=IwAR1OyAZdrgaNu1OOD0GdcT6zWcSORTge2mN-QtdiTdE9X_Mwe4IZvcRk8SA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">says CNN local edition<\/a>, has emerged strongly as the most promising. The bacterium, in fact, showed potential effects against colorectal cancers as well as against one of the most troublesome microorganisms in the world: methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus, or <strong>MRSA<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"Kc53sgClqW\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/jericho-analysis-care-soil\/\">Jericho: an Italian team invents a machine to analyze and treat sick soils<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Jericho: an Italian team invents a machine to analyze and treat sick soils&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/jericho-analysis-care-soil\/embed\/#?secret=Kc53sgClqW\" data-secret=\"Kc53sgClqW\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>A potential tool against antibiotic resistance<\/h5>\n<p>&#8220;Abundant in hospitals, MRSA is strongly resistant [to] antibiotics which makes treatment of infections more difficult,&#8221; explained <strong>Kristel Mae P. Oliveros<\/strong>, the research coordinator. Not surprisingly, she added, &#8220;In fact, the WHO has declared antimicrobial resistance as one of the top 10 global threats to public health.&#8221; Investigations are just at the beginning, but the hope is that future studies will confirm the findings and may help scientists to develop <strong>new drugs<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Streptomycete A1-08, the researchers sayt, shows a <strong>lower anti-tumor efficacy<\/strong> than doxorubicin, an antibiotic used in chemotherapy. Soils host an endless variety of <strong>microorganisms<\/strong> with often unknown potential. It is no coincidence that in recent years there have been many alarms about the risks related to <strong>biodiversity<\/strong> loss given the proven connection between <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/healthy-soil-human-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">soil health and human well-being<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>in a statement <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pna.gov.ph\/articles\/1150302\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">quoted<\/a> by the government news agency PNA in recent weeks, the director of <strong>ASEAN<\/strong> Centre for Biodiversity, <strong>Theresa Mundita Lim<\/strong>, recalled that in 1953 investigations on bacteria conducted in the country led Filipino doctor Abelardo Aguilar to discover the properties of <strong>erythromycin<\/strong>, an antibiotic which is still widely used.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Scientists from the University of Los Ba\u00f1os have isolated 30 bacteria species found at the Mayon volcano, in the north of the country.
